Prepaid funerals: How to cut the cost of your final goodbye

Updated: May 16, 2022

We here at Australian Funeral and Cremations are here to talk about the increasing costs of funerals and how and why to avoid the ever climbing fees. The cost of a funeral is skyrocketing, Melbourne and Australia are not exempt, and people are becoming less and less able to afford to pay for the funeral loved ones deserve.

The average cost of a funeral in the Australia has increased more than 700% since 1970. In 2007, the average cost of a funeral in Melbourne was $8,000. And now in, 2022 the average price of a funeral sits around $12,000, this is an increase of 50% (Moneysmart Victoria).

The increased cost of funerals has led to an increase in the number of people who are unable to afford to pay for a funeral.

Prepaying your funeral can help avoid increasing costs. In fact, according to The Funeral Director’s Association of Australia, when a funeral is prepaid, the average cost avoidance is around 27%. Cost avoidance is the amount of money saved by locking in a prepaid price in compression to the price paid at the time of the funeral.

Put into an example, if you prepaid a funeral that cost $6,600 today in 6 years the price of the funeral can be upwards of $8,382, you are avoiding $1,782.

Money saving is not the only reason to prepay your funeral, however, having the ability to ensure that the service is held in accordance to your wishes, you can plan out your funeral and let us know what you want and how you want it. This is a fantastic thing because it allows you full control over your funeral as well as off loading a massive burden from your family as they won't have to stress or worry over the funeral arrangements nor the finical implications.

The money saving, however, is something that must be taken into considerations. We are as a company significantly more affordable than the competition, and we do save you money on a funeral regardless if you prepay or not, however over time even our prices will go up. The other thing that you may want to consider is cemetery fee’s which, in Melbourne, increase by a minimum 2.5% per year.

Not only do their fees increase but land allocations can run out, meaning you may not be able to get a plot you may want or an area you may like, furthermore new releases are not mandated in price and can be released at a higher fee. By prepaying your funeral with one of our experts, we can set up your plans for start to finish.
